The Oscar Drama Continues

Karla Sofía Gascón should have been canceled for his performance in “Emilia Pérez.” Gascón, who is male but identifies as a woman, was nominated for a Best Actress Oscar and was riding high off the faux success of the film. “Emilia Pérez” seems to be woke Hollywood’s revenge on the rest of the normal world for choosing reality in the 2024 presidential election. How else would a tone-deaf, unmemorable musical get nominated for a record-breaking 13 Oscars?

Gascón, however, is getting canceled for another reason: his uncensored Twitter (now X) posts before he got famous. Who is canceling him? The only ones who hold power in Hollywood — the woke Left.

Gascón’s troubles began when journalist Sara Hagi uncovered and translated Gascón’s old posts on social media. Many of them had to do with Europe’s struggles with immigration and the failure of the government to regulate and ensure that those immigrants were culturally assimilating. Immigrant rapes and murders have been a widespread since Europe basically opened its borders wide open. Gascón’s commentary on the Islamic immigrants was highly critical of the religion and its incompatibility with Western culture.

His posts were anti-globalist and anti-Islamic — definitely enough to alienate the wokesters. Gascón called George Floyd a drug addict (which he was) and a con artist (Floyd had a very long rap sheet) and criticized the narrative of cops as monsters. This really got the racist moniker going. How dare he slight Saint George?

If those weren’t bad enough on the leftist hierarchy of sins, Gascón had more. He called homosexual people a slur and criticized the LGB part of the rainbow acronym. The comments exhibited a startling range that ran from arguably conservative thought to legitimately vile rants worthy of criticism. Gascón learned the hard way about using his social media like a diary.

Once the criticism against Gascón began, he deleted his X account and began damage control.

He started his apology tour by saying he was most certainly not a racist. However, he expressed “most sincere apologies to all the people who may have felt offended for the way I express myself in my past, in my present and in my future. I believe I have been judged, I have been convicted and sacrificed and crucified and stoned without a trial and without the option to defend myself.”

Yeah, that’s “woke” in a nutshell. No grace, no absolution. Gascón is finding out the hard way that the Left doesn’t forgive, no matter how much you apologize. This was made even more clear on Wednesday when it was revealed that the director of “Emilia Pérez,” Jacques Audiard, was taking steps to disown Gascón. Audiard lamented that Gascón’s tweets were overshadowing the conversations about transgenderism and its representation in the musical. (This is actually comical because most LGBTQ critics have called this musical film an extremely bigoted display of what transgenderism is.)

“It’s very hard for me to think back to the work I did with Karla Sofía,” Audiard complained. “The trust we shared, the exceptional atmosphere that we had on the set that was indeed based on trust. And when you have that kind of relationship and suddenly you read something that that person has said, things that are absolutely hateful and worthy of being hated, of course that relationship is affected. It’s as if you fall into a hole. Because what Karla Sofía said is inexcusable.”

Audiard went on to say that he is not speaking with Gascón, “I haven’t spoken to [him], and I don’t want to. [He] is in a self-destructive approach that I can’t interfere in, and I really don’t understand why [he’s] continuing. Why is [he] harming [himself]?” (Gender pronoun edits for clarity.)

With friends like these, who needs enemies?

While this set of circumstances couldn’t have happened to more deserving individuals, it’s worth pointing out, yet again, that the leftist wokesters will happily eat their own. The moral goalposts are constantly moving, and getting canceled is only a matter of time. The irony is that it was the Hollywood elite who decided to elevate this movie and this person because of his “transgender” status. But the second someone uncovers that he might not be a worthy leftist icon, it’s bye-bye.

The Oscars will be awarded on March 2. Gascón’s coworkers are campaigning furiously, hoping Hollywood will overlook the scandal and just how terrible the movie was in order to pull out some wins. Justice would be this transgressive travesty being washed away into obscurity, where it belongs. We’ll see if Tinseltown feels the same way about this film in a few short weeks.
