Russian President Vladimir Putin on Monday backed a suggestion by US counterpart Donald Trump that Russia, the US and China should all cut their military budgets in half.

“I think it’s a good idea. The US would cut by 50 percent and we would cut by 50 percent and then China would join if it wanted,” Putin said in a televised interview.

Mexico president hopeful of deal this week to avert US tariffs

Mexico’s president said Monday she was optimistic about reaching an agreement with Donald Trump this week to avoid sweeping US tariffs, hinting at possible levies on Chinese goods to secure a deal. Claudia Sheinbaum said talks with Washington would continue this week in an effort to avoid the 25 percent tariffs that Trump agreed on February 3 to “pause” for a month. CALGARY—The Alberta government will build two addiction recovery facilities as it prepares to introduce legislation for the involuntary treatment of people deemed to pose a public safety risk due to addiction issues. The province made the announcement at a Feb. 24 press conference in Calgary, where Mental Health and Addictions Minister Dan Williams described the infrastructure project as a foundation for the “compassionate intervention” bill, which will be introduced in the upcoming legislative session, set to begin on Feb. 25.
