In an apparent bid to gain favor with President Trump, who has promised to enact tariffs against Mexico starting March 4, the Mexican government has extradited 29 prisoners wanted by the feds to the U.S. The list of miscreants includes notorious drug lord Rafael Caro Quintero, who was reportedly behind the brutal murder of a DEA agent.

They’ve turned over what sounds like some truly nasty characters:

Mexico has extradited drug lord Rafael Caro Quintero, who was behind the killing of a U.S. DEA agent in 1985, to the United States with 28 prisoners requested by the U.S. government, a Mexican government official said Thursday.

The official, who requested anonymity because they were not authorized to discuss the case, confirmed Caro Quintero’s extradition. Mexico’s Attorney General’s Office said in a statement that the 29 prisoners extradited Thursday faced charges related to drug trafficking among other crimes.

Mexico’s government is trying to head off U.S. President Donald Trump’s threat of imposing 25% tariffs on all Mexican imports that could be imposed next week.

Caro Quintero was arrested by Mexican forces in 2022.

The U.S. State Department confirmed Wednesday that the Trump administration is eliminating thousands of foreign assistance awards and grants at the U.S. Agency for International Development. Peter Marocco, brought in by Secretary of State Marco Rubio to help run USAID, said in a statement to the federal district court presiding over two consolidatedlawsuits brought against the administration by aid organizations that following a review, Secretary of State Marco Rubio decided to cut roughly 92% of the agency’s grants, reported NPR. According to a State Department memoreviewed by the Washington Free Beacon, the 92% figure reflects 5,800 grants valued at $54 billion at USAID that Trump administration officials are set to terminate. Secretary of State Marco Rubio, acting administrator for USAID, has said that the agency will likely face reorganization. The Trump administration says it is eliminating more than 90 percent of foreign aid contracts and grants with the U.S. Agency for International Development (USAID). In all, the administration stated that it would eliminate 5,800 of 6,200 multiyear USAID contract awards, for a cut of $54 billion. Another 4,100 of 9,100 State Department grants were being eliminated, for a cut of $4.4 billion. The move to axe funding is part of President Donald Trump’s wider efforts to weed out government waste and fraud. USAID has been one of the first targets of the new federal Department of Government Efficiency (DOGE), an advisory panel led by tech entrepreneur Elon Musk. The latest cutoff has created panic among the nonprofit organizations and businesses that launched legal action against the Trump administration.
