Yankees’ Gerrit Cole shows off new weapon in solid first spring start

TAMPA — The word of the night for Gerrit Cole: change.

A year after he made just one spring start before his elbow began barking to begin a monthslong saga, Cole’s arm and elbow felt plenty changed.

“I feel way different [than this time last year],” Cole said after his first Grapefruit League outing Friday. “I really like where I’m at. I liked what I saw.”

The Yankees ace physically feels better, and he feels good about his arsenal, too — which now includes a more emphasized and tweaked changeup.

Cole showed off his health and his newest weapon in 3 ¹/₃ innings of a 6-3 win over the Blue Jays at Steinbrenner Field in which he allowed a run and three hits, hit one batter and struck out five.

The righty was sharp, returned for a batter in the fourth inning because he was so efficient and finished with 46 pitches (including 33 strikes).

His four-seam fastball sat around 95 mph, which is a positive for late February, but his changeup was the most intriguing development.

A pitch Cole barely threw last year — used just 4 percent of the time — was featured 15 times and generated three whiffs on seven Toronto…

A STUDENT was crushed to death after falling into in a rubbish bin during a night out in Majorca. Agostina Rubini, 24, had gone missing in Palma after partying with pals on the Spanish party island, sparking a massive police search. Teleperformance uses AI to ‘neutralize’ Indian accents among staff

Teleperformance, the largest call-center operator in the world, is rolling out an artificial intelligence system that softens English-speaking Indian workers’ accents in real time in a move the company claims will make them more understandable. The technology, called accent translation, coupled with background noise cancellation, is being deployed in call centers in India, where workers provide customer support to some of Teleperformance’s international clients. Teleperformance provides outsourced customer support and content moderation to global companies including Apple, ByteDance’s TikTok and Samsung Electronics. “When you have an Indian agent on the line, sometimes it’s hard to hear, to understand,” Deputy-CEO Thomas Mackenbrock said in an interview with Bloomberg. The technology can “neutralize the accent of the Indian speaker with zero latency,” he said. Cops Vote to End Bitter, Prolonged Pay Fight

Thousands of police have voted to accept a bumper pay deal, marking the end of an 18-month dispute over the hike. Voting for Victoria Police’s enterprise bargaining agreement ballot closed on Feb. 28 with 76 percent of 16,200 voting members agreeing to the deal. It includes a minimum 4.5 percent annual pay increase over the next four years with those on the frontline winning an additional 0.5 percent raise. However, members will no longer be allowed to access a clause which enabled them to cash in up to 12 months accrued sick leave upon retirement.
