Mitsubishi Electric explores forming power chip alliances in Japan

Mitsubishi Electric is in talks with domestic rivals about teaming up on power chips, its chief executive officer said, advocating Japanese alliances on the manufacture of a crucial component that drives the world’s devices. While management is broadly supportive of working together, such discussions have snagged on the administrative level and have not moved forward, CEO Kei Uruma said. Still, a sense of urgency is growing as Japanese companies fall further behind German market leader Infineon Technologies. “There are too many competitors in Japan,” Uruma said in an interview. Qantas workers strike over pay dispute

This comes just days after a flight from Brisbane to Adelaide was forced to make an emergency landing due to concerns about the braking system Australian airline Qantas is dealing with a strike from hundreds of engineers during one of the busiest travel periods of the year. The Qantas Engineers Alliance, representing line maintenance engineers from the Australian Manufacturing Workers Union, the Australian Workers Union, and the Electrical Trades Union, said 500 engineers stepped away from the job for 24 hours on Dec. 13. The alliance is demanding a 5 percent annual pay increase, including a 15 percent pay boost in the first year to compensate for 3.5 years of wage freezes. Members of the alliance voted to increase industrial action if Qantas refuses to negotiate, with the majority voting for 40 partial work bans. However, Qantas said the alliance had been asking for more than 40 percent in pay increases over three years, which was not sustainable. President-elect Donald Trump‘s selection of antitrust lawyer Mark Meador for a spot on the Federal Trade Commission is a sign that Trump 2.0 is leaning further into populism and a willingness to challenge the corporate world, especially Big Tech. Meador, a Republican, has worked in both the private sector and for the federal government on antitrust policy. Not cut from the traditional Wall Street-friendly Republican mold, Meador has branded Google a “monopolist,” supports the Kids Online Safety Act that would impose new rules on tech giants, and has eschewed the GOP’s association with big business. “I basically think that he is the clearest choice that Trump could have made that he is committed to a more populist approach to antitrust,” said Abigail Ball, executive director at American Compass, a conservative group that favors a more skeptical approach to big business. Advertisement The FBI receives information and insights on the inner workings of groups that they say pose a threat to the nation, including terrorist, criminal, and espionage networks, via “confidential human sources.” Thirteen of the FBI-hired “confidential” sources made their way into the Capitol’s restricted area, while four of them entered the Capitol building itself.
