Financial Watchdog Warns of Structural Budget Problems

Years of deficits are a sign of a structurally sick Victorian budget and long-term plans to fix it are reactive, the state’s financial watchdog has warned. Auditor-General Andrew Greaves has sounded the alarm about “structural issues” in his 2023/24 annual financial report into the state after the government sector posted another operating loss of $4.2 billion (US$2.7 billion). It was the eighth consecutive year the Victorian Labor government spent more money than it raised, with a fiscal cash deficit of $14.4 billion (US$9.3 billion). The result pushed total losses to $48 billion (US$31.1 billion) in the past five years, $31.5 billion (US$20.4 billion) of which the government blamed on its response to the COVID-19 pandemic and $16.5 billion (US$10.7 billion) on providing public services. But Greaves signalled the repeated outcome was symptomatic of bigger and broader problems. “Ongoing operating losses and fiscal cash deficits are indicators of structural issues with underlying revenue and expenditure policy settings that create risks to financial sustainability,” the report tabled in parliament on Nov. 22 said. A teen girl said her father threatened her with an “honor killing” before allegedly trying to strangle her outside a Washington state high school. It all went down outside Timberline High in Lacey on Oct. 18, KOMO-TV reported. Lacey is a few minutes east of Olympia and just over an hour southwest of Seattle. The girl’s mother, Zahraa Ali, also was grabbing at her daughter and choking her, KOMO said, citing court documents. Investigators told the station the girl’s father also punched her boyfriend. The 17-year-old victim told investigators her father’s “honor killing” threat came after she refused to go to another country for an arranged marriage with an older man, KOMO said, citing court records. SCOTUS Schedules Arguments Over Mexico’s Lawsuit Against Gunmakers – Bearing Arms

We’ve known for almost two months that the Supreme Court will decide the future of Mexico’s lawsuit against several U.S. gunmakers that accuses them of aiding and abetting cartel violence south of the border, but now we have a date for oral arguments in Smith & Wesson Brands v. Estados Unios Mexicanos. The justices have calendared the case for oral arguments on March 4, 2025, which means we’re likely to get a decision in the case towards the end of the court’s term next June. At issue is whether the production and sale of firearms in the United States is the “proximate cause” of alleged injuries to the Mexican government stemming from violence committed by drug cartels in Mexico, as well as whether the production and sale of firearms in the United States amounts to “aiding and abetting” illegal firearms trafficking because firearms companies allegedly know that some of their products are unlawfully trafficked south of the border.
