U.S. Secretary of State Marco Rubio said the American president’s repeated comments about Canada becoming the “51st state” began when the Prime Minister Justin Trudeau said in a meeting that the country would “cease to exist” with high American tariffs on its goods. Whenever he scores another win, we just assume it’s a day ending in a ‘Y’. Most recently, he brought out his rhetorical whoopin’ stick to smack everyone criticizing President Trump’s position on Ukraine and his efforts to end the war with Russia. And that was just one day after he floored the audience at CPAC — and buried the left — with some brilliant remarks about free speech, among other topics. Our colonial ancestors were the most literate in the world. By 2023, American students ranked at a near 30-year-low compared with students from other developed nations on international tests. That, despite the U.S. spending more per pupil than most other countries in the world. The latest national test scores showed that students are “falling dangerously behind in math and reading,” a threat to the nation’s economy. Not since 2000, when the test began, has this large a percentage of eighth-graders performed below “basic” level in reading. Merely one third of eighth-graders are “proficient” in math or English. What has changed? Federal control over elementary and secondary education — control that has increased dramatically in recent decades. With that control has come a dramatic increase in spending under the U.S. Department of Education and its predecessor agencies, from $4.5 billion in 1965 to $40.2 billion in 2016 to $268.35 billion in 2024. James Bond is about to enter uncertain waters, as Amazon.com, which purchased MGM four years ago for $8.5 billion, has now assumed creative control over the franchise. Amazon reportedly paid an extra billion dollars just for the Bond films. What they craved, however, was creative control over the Bond brand. Barbara Broccoli and Michael G. Wilson, the heads of Eon and custodians of everything related to James Bond, entered into a joint venture with Amazon MGM. The Broccolis will retain an ownership stake in Bond and his films, but Amazon MGM will be in the driver’s seat creatively. That means, in all likelihood, woke changes to the character, with possibly a female Bond, and certainly a Bond of a different color.
