The news of the day is the big blowup at the White House between President Trump, VP Vance and President Zelensky. Ed and Beege have already weighed in on that and I generally agree that, after watching the interaction devolve in real time, it seems to me that Zelensky badly miscalculated what he was going to achieve today and wound up setting back his own cause.

Of course the divide on this is just like the divide on everything else. It’s mostly Trump supporters and people on the right who think Trump was right to get angry and it’s mostly people on the left who are saying Trump was completely in the wrong. Maybe there are some exceptions but I’m not seeing many at this moment. People on the left are suggesting this was all planned in advance to humiliate Zelensky. People on the right are suggesting Zelensky was put up to this by European leaders who egged him on to confront Trump in front of the media.

We’ll find out if any of that is true. My own take is that Trump seemed to be on best behavior for quite a while and didn’t seem to have planned for this kind of meltdown. As for Zelensky, I don’t see any evidence he planned to create a show. He was…

Last month’s Palisades and Eaton wildfires caused between $28 billion and $53.8 billion in property damage, with business disruptions projected to result in economic losses of up to $8.9 billion in Los Angeles County alone over the next five years, according to a study published Thursday. The report commissioned by the Southern California Leadership Council and the LA County Economic Development Corporation studies the impacts of the destruction and economic havoc caused by the fires and offers data-driven recommendations to guide recovery efforts. The study estimates that the fires could lead to up to 49,110 job-years lost and reductions in labor income of up to $3.7 billion, while federal, state and local governments could experience tax revenue losses ranging from $730 million to $1.4 billion. Teleperformance uses AI to ‘neutralize’ Indian accents among staff

Teleperformance, the largest call-center operator in the world, is rolling out an artificial intelligence system that softens English-speaking Indian workers’ accents in real time in a move the company claims will make them more understandable. The technology, called accent translation, coupled with background noise cancellation, is being deployed in call centers in India, where workers provide customer support to some of Teleperformance’s international clients. Teleperformance provides outsourced customer support and content moderation to global companies including Apple, ByteDance’s TikTok and Samsung Electronics. “When you have an Indian agent on the line, sometimes it’s hard to hear, to understand,” Deputy-CEO Thomas Mackenbrock said in an interview with Bloomberg. The technology can “neutralize the accent of the Indian speaker with zero latency,” he said. Cops Vote to End Bitter, Prolonged Pay Fight

Thousands of police have voted to accept a bumper pay deal, marking the end of an 18-month dispute over the hike. Voting for Victoria Police’s enterprise bargaining agreement ballot closed on Feb. 28 with 76 percent of 16,200 voting members agreeing to the deal. It includes a minimum 4.5 percent annual pay increase over the next four years with those on the frontline winning an additional 0.5 percent raise. However, members will no longer be allowed to access a clause which enabled them to cash in up to 12 months accrued sick leave upon retirement.
