In a stunning display of journalistic hypocrisy, CNN anchor Jake Tapper is now cashing in on a cover-up he helped perpetuate.
Tapper, who spent years dismissing legitimate concerns about President Biden’s cognitive decline as right-wing conspiracy theories, has co-authored a forthcoming book titled Original Sin: President Biden’s Decline, Its Cover-up, and His Disastrous Choice to Run Again.
The book, co-written with Axios correspondent Alex Thompson and set for release on May 20, reveals what conservative Americans have known all along – Biden was suffering from significant cognitive decline during his presidency, and the liberal media complex worked tirelessly to hide this crucial information from voters.
The same Jake Tapper who in 2020 lectured Lara Trump about having “absolutely no standing to diagnose somebody’s cognitive decline” when she pointed out Biden’s obvious mental struggles now claims to have conducted over 200 interviews exposing the “extended public deception” of Biden’s condition. Tapper, who once asked how Lara Trump’s comments might make “little kids with stutters feel,” apparently now acknowledges that Biden’s problems went far beyond a childhood stutter.
From defender to exposé author
What changed? Certainly not the evidence. Conservative commentators and ordinary Americans have been sounding the alarm about Biden’s mental fitness since before the 2020 election, pointing to his frequent verbal gaffes, confused statements, and physical stumbles.
Yet CNN and other liberal media outlets, with Tapper leading the charge, consistently characterized these concerns as unfounded attacks. Even after Biden’s State of the Union address in 2022, where he infamously referred to Ukrainians as “Iranians,” Tapper praised it as “a fairly solid performance” given Biden’s “speaking talents and challenges.”
It wasn’t until Biden’s disastrous June 2024 debate performance – which Tapper himself co-moderated – that the CNN anchor finally began questioning Biden’s fitness for office. By then, the damage had been done. Americans had been deliberately misled about their president’s capacity to govern for nearly four years.
“What you will learn makes President Biden’s decision to run for reelection seem shockingly narcissistic, self-delusional, and reckless,” promises the book’s press release. What’s truly shocking is that Tapper and CNN waited until Biden was out of office before revealing the truth they helped conceal.
Profiting from the deception
The backlash against Tapper has been swift and well-deserved. Former White House Press Secretary Sean Spicer called it “a joke” that Tapper and CNN “covered up Biden’s decline and now you guys want to profit from it.”
Conservative commentator Sean Davis put it bluntly: “Tapper could’ve outed the Biden mental incapacity cover-up at any time over the last four years. But he didn’t. He waited until Biden was gone before trying to get rich for disclosing facts he claimed were lies the whole time Biden was in office.”
The book’s title is inadvertently apt – the “original sin” belongs not just to Biden for selfishly running for reelection despite his deteriorating condition, but to media figures like Tapper who abandoned journalistic integrity to protect a Democratic president and influence an election. Biden may have been, as Special Counsel Robert Hur described him, “a sympathetic, elderly man with a poor memory,” but there’s nothing sympathetic about journalists who deliberately misled the American people about their commander-in-chief’s fitness to serve.
Tapper’s belated admission of what was painfully obvious to millions of Americans for years doesn’t absolve him of his role in the cover-up. It merely confirms what conservatives have long suspected about the mainstream media – truth takes a backseat to partisan politics, and principles are easily sacrificed for profit.
