‘Conservative’ Outfits Are ‘Scouring’ Because Journalists Won’t

The other day I acquired a new title: “Scourer.” My organization, Protect the Public’s Trust (PPT), was among the groups mentioned in a Politico article the outlet’s X account promoted as “Conservative outfits are scouring feds’ emails.”

I know “scouring” isn’t meant as a compliment, but I’m happy to take it that way. As stated in the article, PPT has made more than 1,600 Freedom of Information Act (FOIA) requests of the Biden-Harris administration. We’ve done so because the journalists and watchdog groups so enthusiastic about policing the Trump administration seem to have decided sometime around January 20, 2021, that their vigilance was no longer needed.

I have no issue with how I and PPT were portrayed in Robin Bravender’s report, but the piece’s framing and marketing were a bald attempt to whip up fear inside the Beltway of a Trump II purge of the bureaucracy. Bravender quoted the overwrought words of the Environmental Protection Network’s Jeremy Symons: “This abuse of the FOIA system is to intimidate civil servants and pave the way for hit lists in the event that Trump takes office.”

HOUSTON (Reuters) – A U.S. National Labor Relations Board administrative law judge has ruled Exxon Mobil (NYSE:)’s 10-month-long lockout of some 600 union workers at a Texas oil refinery during a contract dispute was legal. The judge sided with Exxon in his decision on Nov. 21, finding the 2021 and 2022 lockout was to pressure the United Steelworkers union workers toward a deal, not to oust the union from the 369,024 barrel-per-day (bpd) Beaumont, Texas, refinery complex. The USW had faced a decertification campaign and filed an unfair labor practice complaint during the lockout, alleging an improper effort to break the plant’s union. The union had sought millions of dollars in lost pay and benefits for the workers who were locked out of the plant between May 2021 and March 2022. “There is little or no evidence that the company locked out the unit employees to unlawfully pressure them to decertify the union,” NLRB law judge Jeffrey Wedekind said in an opinion accompanying the decision. A spokesperson for Exxon did not reply to a request for comment. By Marc Frank HAVANA (Reuters) – Cuba, which once produced millions of tons of sugar, expects to output just 300,000 metric tons of the sweetener in 2025, according to provincial media reports, as it struggles to find the resources to plant cane in a bitter symbol of agriculture’s decline on the Caribbean island. Sugar was long “king” in Cuba as a hundred mills churned out raw sugar for domestic consumption and export. But the fuel, fertilizer, machinery and labor shortages that plague Cuba’s broader farm sector have hit the sugar industry especially hard, with year after year of record-breaking low output. Production of sugar cane is dominated by state mills in Cuba’s Communist-run economy. This year, less cane means a record low of just 15 mills will be open for sugar production, versus 24 the year before, the government announced as the first mill opened this week. “We have to plant cane,” Vice President Salvador Valdes said in central Camaguey province in late November, a province slated to produce 10,000 tonnes compared with up to 200,000 in the past. “The first thing is the cane. Trump team reports bomb threats to cabinet nominees

Several members of Donald Trump’s incoming administration have received threats including bomb alerts, a spokeswoman for the president-elect said Wednesday. “Last night and this morning, several of President Trump’s Cabinet nominees and Administration appointees were targeted in violent, unAmerican threats to their lives and those who live with them,” said transition team spokeswoman Karoline Leavitt in a statement. Without saying who was targeted, Leavitt said these incidents ranged from bomb threats to “swatting,” the practice in which police are summoned urgently to someone’s house under false pretenses. Elise Stefanik, a Trump loyalist congresswoman tapped to be UN ambassador, said her residence in New York was targeted in a bomb threat. Canada didn’t live up to its values on immigration over the last few years as it allowed more people into the country than it could absorb, said former Bank of Canada governor Mark Carney. Carney, who is a special adviser to the Liberal party, made the comments at an event on Wednesday in Ottawa held by Cardus, a Christian think tank. “I think what happened in the last few years is we didn’t live up to our values on immigration,” Carney said. “We had much higher levels of foreign workers, students and new Canadians coming in than we could absorb, that we have housing for, that we have health care for, that we have social services for, that we have opportunities for.
