A prominent critic of President-elect Donald Trump appears to be preparing to oppose key aspects of the incoming administration’s foreign policy agenda despite the electoral mandate of America First.

Sen. Mitch McConnell (R-Ky.) is challenging Trump’s foreign policy outlook, urging the president-elect to reject what he describes as America First’s “flirtation with isolation and decline” in an essay published in Foreign Affairs on Monday.

The former Senate Republican leader is also encouraging the administration to adopt many foreign policy positions that Trump notably opposed during the campaign, including supporting increased foreign aid, free trade agreements, solidarity with NATO, and more weapons transfers to Ukraine.

NYC judge rejects Trump’s bid to dismiss conviction based on presidential immunity

Judge Juan Merchan rejected President-elect Donald Trump’s request to dismiss the conviction in his New York criminal case on the basis of presidential immunity. On Monday, Merchan presented a 41-page ruling denying Trump’s bid and upholding the 34-count conviction for falsifying business records. ‘This lawless case should have never been brought.’ Earlier this year, Trump’s lawyers filed a motion to overturn the jury’s guilty verdict, arguing that some of the prosecution’s evidence was from his time in office and should have been excluded based on the United States Supreme Court’s presidential immunity ruling. Russia’s seaborne oil exports have declined since October. Sanctions have tightened on Russia’s oil business, with more restrictions on seaborne trade. Russia’s oil revenue, a crucial component of its war budget, dropped 24% in 2023. Russia’s seaborne oil exports — a key part of the nation’s oil trade — have taken a hit in recent months, as Western sanctions on one of Moscow’s most important sources of revenue continue to tighten. Bloomberg data shows that Russia shipped 3.06 million barrels of oil a day by sea in the four weeks leading up to December 15. That’s down around 13% from a peak four-week average in October, when it shipped 3.46 million barrels of crude a day. The nation’s oil exports have also declined compared to 2023. Moscow exported an average of 70,000 barrels of crude a day so far this year, 2% lower than the 2023 average, Bloomberg reported.
