“Our perimeter has been breached!” There was panic in the voice of the radio operator. The squad assigned to the remote Vietnamese village had been under attack for almost an hour and I had been called to the Operations Center to take a “quick reaction” team to go to their defense. The captain was instructing them to fall back and consolidate their position when the radio went silent on the other end.
We assembled a team and boarded two five-ton trucks and headed toward the village. Realizing we could be driving into an ambush, we stopped about half a mile from the compound and approached the village from the backside. The silence was palpable. Upon entering, we found most of the huts on fire and bodies strewn across the village — villagers, Marines, and the few militia members who had not fled into the night. The enemy had plenty of time to collect their dead and retreat back into the night. We conducted a quick sweep before establishing a landing zone for helicopters to land and remove the Marine casualties.
America, your “perimeter” has been breached! How could that happen, you ask? Let me share my opinion.
When God called Israel to Himself, He protected them every step of the way. Once they were in their land, He put a “hedge” of protection around them — a “perimeter,” if you will. Here is what God said about them:
Let me sing for My beloved, My love song concerning his vineyard: My beloved had a vineyard on a very fertile hill. He dug it and cleared it of stones, and planted it with choice vines; He built a watchtower in the midst of it, and hewed out a wine vat in it; and He looked for it to yield grapes, but it yielded wild grapes. (Isaiah 5:1-2, ESV)
God had done everything for His chosen people, and they responded by falling into idolatry and injustice.
And now I will tell you what I will do to my vineyard. I will remove its hedge [perimeter], and it shall be devoured; I will break down its wall, and it shall be trampled down. I will make it a waste; it shall not be pruned or hoed, and briers and thorns shall grow up; I will also command the clouds that they rain no rain upon it. (Isaiah 5:5-6)
With their perimeter, their “hedge” of protection, gone, Israel was conquered and subjected to 70 years of captivity in a foreign land.
Contrary to the opinion of the “history illiterate,” America was founded as a Christian nation. Judeo-Christian principles were the foundation on which this nation was birthed. When America embraced those principles, God “shed His grace” upon it. Now we’ve had presidents and politicians state we are “no longer a Christian nation,” and all too many have embraced that inaccurate concept. As a result, the hedge has been broken down and the enemy has come in like a flood.
The works of the enemy are evident in every aspect of our society, and many Christians despair for the condition of our nation.
BUT GOD. God called Israel to repent, but they did not heed the call. In Ezekiel, we see God looking for someone to pray for the nation.
And I sought for a man among them, that should make up the hedge and stand in the gap before me for the land, that I should not destroy it: but I found none. (Ezekiel 22:30, KJV)
We stand in the gap when we pray and intercede on behalf of our nation for God to move against the wickedness around us. God could not find anyone to “stand in the gap” for Israel. Will He find Christians here in America who will answer the call?
The Apostle James tells us, “The prayer of a righteous person has great power as it is working” (James 5:16, ESV). We are righteous because we have Christ’s righteousness, not our own, so we have “great power” when we pray.
My brother Roger is always challenging people to pray for another “Great Awakening.” God cares for the soul of this nation. Are you willing to stand in the gap for your family, your home, and your nation? I intend to do just that. Prayer is where the battle is won. Prayer is the battle.
What say ye, Man of Valor?
