An earthquake with a preliminary magnitude of 5.1 has shaken Vancouver, Victoria and other cites on B.C.’s southwest coast. Natural Resources Canada says the quake was centred 24 kilometres north-northeast of Sechelt on the Sunshine Coast. It says the quake occurred at 1:26 p.m. local time and there were no immediate reports of damage. British Columbia’s emergency information website says officials are monitoring the situation and the public should stand by for more information. Posts on social media suggest the quake was felt across much of the Lower Mainland, as well as Vancouver Island. ProPublica’s most recent attempt to blame pro-life laws for pregnancy complications points to an alleged increase in the sepsis rate among Texas women who experienced pregnancy loss in the second trimester, following the enactment of the state’s Heartbeat Act in 2021. To build the report, four article authors at ProPublica claim they purchased and analyzed seven years of discharge data from Texas hospitals, but failed to share their sources or raw data with readers. The report leaves numerous unanswered questions about what may have actually caused a spike in sepsis rates connected to pregnancy loss. In its report, ProPublica claimed that sepsis was more “pronounced” in women whose preborn babies still had heartbeats when they arrived at the hospital. Though several doctors told ProPublica that the “only explanation” could be the state’s pro-life law, this is unlikely. The Trump administration has announced it will be replacing ICE Director Caleb Vitello. The Department of Homeland Security has announced Vitello will be reassigned within the agency. A DHS spokesperson shared, “He is no longer in an administrative role, but is overseeing all field and enforcement operations: finding, arresting, and deporting illegal aliens, which is a major priority of the President and Secretary Noem.” It’s speculated Vitello was reassigned after it was reported monthly deportations had not hit the Trump administration’s targets.
