Chinese companies have turned out in force again at this year’s Consumer Electronics Show, with their prospects overshadowed by the threat of steeper tariffs from incoming U.S. President Donald Trump.

XPeng’s “flying car” and TCL’s AI-enhanced television were just a few of the products offered by Chinese companies that have won attention at CES, the annual Las Vegas tech conference.

The potential for Trump’s trade policies to roil the global tech industry has loomed large over the event.

WASHINGTON—After lying in state at the U.S. Capitol for two days, former President Jimmy Carter will be honored with an official state funeral at the Washington National Cathedral on Jan. 9. The invite-only service, which will be attended by dignitaries and members of Carter’s family, is scheduled for 10 a.m. ET. Attendees are expected to include all five living presidents, including President Joe Biden and President-elect Donald Trump. Carter died on Dec. 29 at the age of 100—the longest-living former president in U.S. history. Biden, who served in the Senate during Carter’s presidency, will give the eulogy. The president is expected to talk about Carter’s career inside and outside the White House, such as brokering the Camp David Accords, in which Egypt agreed to normalize ties with Israel, Hofstra University political science professor Meena Bose told The Epoch Times. Biggest flu outbreak in 25 years hits Japan

Japan in the last week of December experienced the biggest influenza outbreak since comparable data became available 25 years ago, health authorities said Thursday. The latest health ministry analysis of data gathered from 5,000 medical clinics showed that from December 23-29, 317,812 people were diagnosed with flu. That is more than three times the 104,612 cases recorded in the same period in 2023, and the most for any week since records began in 1999, the ministry said. Cases of flu often rise in the winter in Japan and elsewhere, but some countries have seen large jumps in cases recently including in France and Britain. Australia logged more than 350,000 laboratory-confirmed flu cases last year — dwarfing a previous high of 313,615 in 2019, according to its national diseases surveillance system. […]
