WASHINGTON –

By late last week, President Donald Trump had decided to fire Gen. Charles Q. Brown, the chair of the Joint Chiefs of Staff, and replace him with one of two very different candidates, according to two administration officials.

One was Gen. Michael E. Kurilla, a hard-charging Army four-star general who oversees U.S. military operations in the Middle East, one of the Pentagon’s highest-profile assignments.

The other was a little-known retired three-star Air Force officer, Dan Caine, with an unorthodox career path that included time as a fighter pilot, the top military liaison to the CIA and an Air National Guard officer who founded a regional airline in Texas.

Former Labour MP Mike Amesbury is facing calls to resign after he was jailed for 10 weeks for punching a man to the ground. Chester Magistrates’ Court heard on Monday that Amesbury had been drinking before the incident, which saw him assault Paul Fellows, 45, at a taxi rank in Frodsham, in the early hours of Oct. 26, 2024. A video showed the Runcorn and Helsby MP repeatedly hitting the man lying on the ground, while bystanders tried to intervene. According to CBN News, Omer Wenkert, 23, Omer Shem Tov, 22, Eliyah Cohen, 27, Tal Shoham, 40, Avera Mengistu, 39, were released by Hamas in two separate ceremonies in central and southern Gaza, respectively. A sixth hostage, Hisham al-Sayed, 37, was also set free. Both Mengistu and al-Sayed had been held captive in Gaza for over a decade. Meanwhile, Israel is expected to release more than 600 Palestinian inmates and prisoners, including those convicted of killing Israelis, in return for the hostages. The Trump Administration is set to put all remaining civil servants at the United States Agency for International Development (USAID) on administrative leave, a move that will impact thousands of employees at the rapidly-dwindling agency. According to The Hill, the decision was confirmed by an internal notice from the Office of the Administrator, declaring that the move will go into effect at midnight on Monday. In addition, 2,000 other employees will be fired as part of the White House’s ongoing “reduction-in-force” (RIF) efforts against the agency.
