Financial Watchdog Warns of Structural Budget Problems

Years of deficits are a sign of a structurally sick Victorian budget and long-term plans to fix it are reactive, the state’s financial watchdog has warned. Auditor-General Andrew Greaves has sounded the alarm about “structural issues” in his 2023/24 annual financial report into the state after the government sector posted another operating loss of $4.2 billion (US$2.7 billion). It was the eighth consecutive year the Victorian Labor government spent more money than it raised, with a fiscal cash deficit of $14.4 billion (US$9.3 billion). The result pushed total losses to $48 billion (US$31.1 billion) in the past five years, $31.5 billion (US$20.4 billion) of which the government blamed on its response to the COVID-19 pandemic and $16.5 billion (US$10.7 billion) on providing public services. But Greaves signalled the repeated outcome was symptomatic of bigger and broader problems. “Ongoing operating losses and fiscal cash deficits are indicators of structural issues with underlying revenue and expenditure policy settings that create risks to financial sustainability,” the report tabled in parliament on Nov. 22 said. President Joe Biden, a “devout” Catholic, awarded the highest civilian honor a person can receive to a woman who has the blood of more than four million unborn babies on her hands. The former president of Planned Parenthood, Cecile Richards, was given the presidential medal of freedom for her “absolute courage” and “fearless[ness],” who Biden says has “carved an inspiring legacy.” Richards, the daughter of late Democrat Texas governor Ann Richards, spent 12 years working as Planned Parenthood’s chief; during that time, she was caught on an undercover video arranging payments for fetal tissue from aborted babies. However, the clinic has denied allegations that the video is accurate. The ICC accuses Netanyahu and former Israeli Defense Minister Yoav Gallant of war crimes and crimes against humanity in Gaza. Ibrahim Al-Masri, a leader of the Hamas terrorist group, has also been indicted on the same charges, as previously reported by TGP. Orbán sharply criticized the ICC’s decision, assuring Netanyahu that he would face no risks during a visit to Hungary. O’Leary said, “I think what he’s being concerned about is the goods and services he imports from China. There is going to be tariffs on China that are very aggressive and that’s because we’re in a trade war with China, an economic war with them. The online news arm of MSNBC is taking heavy fire for posting an article attempting to humanize the illegal immigrant killer of Georgia student Laken Riley one day after he was sentenced to life in prison without the possibility of parole. The Daily Mail reported that social media fury is growing against the liberal outlet since it published a story about Jose Ibarra, 25, a Venezuelan gang member living in the country illegally. Under a headline stating Ibarra “never stood a chance” in court, MSNBC legal analyst Danny Cevallos wrote a lengthy summary about the mountain of evidence stacked up against him, including that Ibarra’s DNA was found beneath Riley’s fingernails, indicating a physical fight. A teen girl said her father threatened her with an “honor killing” before allegedly trying to strangle her outside a Washington state high school. It all went down outside Timberline High in Lacey on Oct. 18, KOMO-TV reported. Lacey is a few minutes east of Olympia and just over an hour southwest of Seattle. The girl’s mother, Zahraa Ali, also was grabbing at her daughter and choking her, KOMO said, citing court documents. Investigators told the station the girl’s father also punched her boyfriend. The 17-year-old victim told investigators her father’s “honor killing” threat came after she refused to go to another country for an arranged marriage with an older man, KOMO said, citing court records. The station noted that she reportedly went to her school for help, which led to the confrontation outside the school. SCOTUS Schedules Arguments Over Mexico’s Lawsuit Against Gunmakers – Bearing Arms

We’ve known for almost two months that the Supreme Court will decide the future of Mexico’s lawsuit against several U.S. gunmakers that accuses them of aiding and abetting cartel violence south of the border, but now we have a date for oral arguments in Smith & Wesson Brands v. Estados Unios Mexicanos. The justices have calendared the case for oral arguments on March 4, 2025, which means we’re likely to get a decision in the case towards the end of the court’s term next June. At issue is whether the production and sale of firearms in the United States is the “proximate cause” of alleged injuries to the Mexican government stemming from violence committed by drug cartels in Mexico, as well as whether the production and sale of firearms in the United States amounts to “aiding and abetting” illegal firearms trafficking because firearms companies allegedly know that some of their products are unlawfully trafficked south of the border.
